In case you didn\u2019t know, some of the oldest buildings in Norwalk were constructed in the 1700s. However, not many are still standing from that period due to General Tryon burning the town in 1779 during the American Revolution. There are currently over two dozen locations in Norwalk that are listed under the National Register of Historic Places. Some of these buildings you likely already know and love! They include churches, community centers, libraries, bridges, and theaters. The preservation of these locations help bring us closer to understanding our history as a community, especially as we enter the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n
The Norwalk Preservation Trust (NPT) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit incorporated in Connecticut. Launched by a founding team in 2003, it has operated successfully in establishing an awareness of historic preservation in the Norwalk area and has been valuable to the community in the preservation of specific historic landmarks. Historic sites and structures provide important information about people and events. They are Norwalk’s visible history. Protecting Norwalk’s historic places, however, accomplishes more than just preserving the past. It has real, tangible benefits for our city in the here and now. Our most notable project was the restoration of the 1750s homestead on 93 East Avenue in 2013.<\/p>\n
As a historic homeowner, we are asking if you would like to join us as a member of the Historic Homeowners Group of Norwalk to continue our journey of preserving our local history. It will include one free historic lecture per year, and other benefits such as meeting other historic homeowners and local discounts. The membership fee will be $45 a year.<\/p>\n
