2018 Preservation Scholarship Awards

Open to High School Juniors and Seniors

The Norwalk Preservation Trust, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, whose mission statement is ". . . to protect our irreplaceable historic buildings and neighborhoods, landscapes and streetscapes, by raising awareness, partnering with other organizations, and taking appropriate action when necessary" offers three scholarship awards of $750.00 each to a junior or senior of Norwalk High School, Brien McMahon High School, or Richard C. Briggs High School who meet the following requirements:

  1. Submit no later than April 15, 2018, either a) a type written essay of not more than 2,000 words, or b) a visual presentation, work of art, or performance, or, c) some combination of a) and b), that addresses the following questions or subject areas:
    • Why is local history important?
    • Why is the preservation of historic districts important?
    • How do historic buildings create a sense of community and contribute to the identity of a city?
    • Why is restoration of historic landmarks and public understanding of them important?
    • What does the continued use of historic places and/or the re-purposing of them mean and why is it important?
  2. After responding to these questions, apply your knowledge of the subject areas to a specific historic building, landmark, memorial or historic district located in Norwalk. These areas may include, for example, the Norwalk Green Historic District, the Wall Street Historic District, or the South Norwalk Historic District.

The winning projects will be judged by the Scholarship Committee of the Norwalk Preservation Trust and awarded to the top three applicants, regardless of which school they attend. Each work will be judged upon the basis of originality, quality of research, and comprehensiveness. The project may fulfill a community service requirement and could be suitable for referencing on a student's resume.

Applicants must be a current junior or senior student at one of the three Norwalk high schools. The top applicants from each school will receive two free tickets to NPT's annual historic tour event in addition to their cash awards. All winning applicants for the NPT Scholarship agree to share their project or essay at a Norwalk Preservation Trust walking tour in Fall 2018, or later date to be determined. Winning applicants agree that NPT may publish award winning projects on its website in connection with this Scholarship.
